Anything can be converted to anything. In the absolute worst case scenario (I did this earlier today when I had a MIDI file & wanted to use only free software already on hand) you can analog rip it by recording your own output in a program like Audacity.

For all audio needs, give dbpoweramp ago ... its free, and tons of codecs available ... 8)

Almost every audio converter can do that now. My favorite thing to do is to use SoundForge to convert and edit Flac. But I would recommend you to use some good free converter.

This is the method I use.

I use winamp to convert the flac file to wav. Then I use itunes to convert the wav to an mp3. If you need more assistance let me know.

!! NEVER USE ITUNES MP3 ENCODER !! It is the most sadistic thing you can do to an audio file. That encoder should be f'ing Banned from Existence. Please for the love of audio use Lame! There is even a convenient tool for windows, LameDrop.

+1 foobar2000. It is the way to go.

well... realistically, the itunes mp3 encoder is not horrible. it is, however, a better idea to use lame - but for the simple folk this is an ok solution.

? Do you listen to any music that uses snares? or bass?

Different ears, I guess. Apple is ridiculous for shipping such an awful encoder when there is a GPL (read: Free) option that Destroys theirs.

itunes mp3 vs lame mp3, thats like divx 3.11 ;-) vs Xvid ...

for 128kbps material i agree. but at >=192kbps it should be fine

you have to realize that 99% of people are not nerds that know how to use lame.

Isn't this a thread asking for advice on flac to mp3? I've tried many bitrates in iTunes and they are all awful. As you already suggested, foobar2000 is a nice media app with right click conversion. That uses lame.

So why are you trying to make lame sound so confusing?

I am not just being some nutcase here, iTunes mp3 is seriously bad. Distortion is very notice-able to me on the albums I mistakenly ripped to iTunes mp3 and I never encode to less than 192kbps.

rarewares is a good site, too, btw ;)

Lamedrop and Oggdrop are good programs. Very good programs.

goldwave will also convert flac to wave or mp3 as that program works with direct show filters so even if it is not listed as a supported format (ex ac3) it opens it anyway
