Hot damn, that UYI Old Habits Die Hard cover sure does look good!

lol, btw Throw, I love the design of your Superbad cover. It's a bummer you don't have any competition for it!

03-21-2008, 02:52 AM
I think there are a lot of nice ones...
cool competition!
I really like the back of UYI2 and throw's Superbad is fantastic, although I wish, he would have added the blood stain to the front too, right where it belongs. ;-

03-21-2008, 03:13 AM
I voted UseYourIllusionII. That one is really nice cover art!

03-21-2008, 05:56 AM
lol, btw Throw, I love the design of your Superbad cover. It's a bummer you don't have any competition for it!He almost did, since I only have the back text of my Superbad-cover unfinished, but hey, it's past the deadline so I'll just release it at the gallery-section.

03-21-2008, 05:58 AM
I'm looking forward to seeing that cover Messenjah14

03-21-2008, 07:03 AM
Great covers.... i vote UseYourIllusionII

03-21-2008, 11:04 AM
I love Throw's Superbad (it'll be in the case with the movie), and I loved his Die Hard one, but you can't top UYI this go-round. I voted for his.

03-21-2008, 11:24 AM
okay...last time 49 people voted... I can still win ;-)
..and I gave my vote to throw.

03-21-2008, 11:24 AM
Yup, I also voted for UYI. Design-wise, nobody ran away with anything, but that colour scheme is incredible.

Boon, I really liked yours, especially the disc--Texas Chain Saw Willis!

03-21-2008, 11:28 AM
yeah, I originally planned my cover art with this as front, but wife said she did not like that image... and sometimes she is just right. So I dropped it and used for the disc. Seeing that now almost everyone uses VERY similar images fo rthe front... I guess she was wrong. ;-)

03-21-2008, 11:40 AM
how did you do that font boon?

03-21-2008, 11:51 AM
with jasc it is a rather difficult procedure, especially when it is supposed to exactly fit on a background. But most of all it is just a texture on text. Font is Arial Black.

03-21-2008, 12:10 PM
you can make that fairly quickly with photoshop

03-21-2008, 01:53 PM
great cover artwork. man it?s really difficult this time. UseYourIllusionII ?s cover is a real hottie! But Throw?s has this smart elegance and does bruce look cool on it or what? AstonMartin?s also done a real nice job. especially the simple but brilliant font for the title is a catcher. boon is as always hard competition for the other competitors. damn this is hard...

how about a second vote for the undecided patrons?

03-21-2008, 01:59 PM
Don't forget the Brass Booby candidates (http://www.faneditforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=3835), peoples!

Especially mine!

03-21-2008, 05:31 PM
It's funny...I voted for mine with my own vote because usually NO ONE votes for my covers, no matter how much design or cool color schemes or work I put into it. lol. I wish I hadn't voted for mine now because I never liked how people voted for their own, but during these competitions I usually vote for mine just to give me some sort of vote count. lol. Soooo, I figured I'd put in my two cents.

Out of the ones that aren't mine, I personally like Throw's Old Habits Die Hard the best. It's so classy looking, and elegant, and I love that simple disc art. it looks great. the way the logo looks on the cover is awesome too. Other than his, I like AstonMartin4Me's cover because it's simple but the text effects are very subtle and add to that official, clean, slick look. I'm not really a fan of any of the other Die Hard covers, no offense, I just don't think they work as covers very much at all. The superbad cover could have more detail put into it and such, but I love the design aspects.

03-22-2008, 11:33 AM
Throw's disc was a big draw for me, too, because I'm a simplicity nut. If I'd had time to do up a disc mask in PS, it was only going to be title too.

Frankly, I'm surprised there weren't more Superbad submissions. For concept, it's much richer territory than Die Hard.

As it was I didn't have time to even polish my first cover, much less do a second. ( I do have a lot of unused penis drawing captures on my hard drive, though!)

03-22-2008, 11:51 AM

Ghostcut for teh booby.

03-22-2008, 12:01 PM
I am going to play Nostradamus and make a prediction...

03-22-2008, 12:04 PM
My favourite cover was the one by AstonMartins4Me, so I voted for that.

03-22-2008, 07:40 PM
Wow, this is hard to pick from. I like them all a lot.

03-22-2008, 08:56 PM
Yeah, I struggled picking between UYI's Die Hard and Throw's Superbad. It basically came to a coin flip for me, with Die Hard coming out on top (sorry, Throw).

03-24-2008, 05:13 AM
Muhahahahahahaha!!! Some people hath voted for me! There can be only one explanation: my mind control device must be working at last...

In all seriousness though, thanks to everyone who voted for me so far and thanks in advance for anyone who is going to vote for me in the future. Come on, it's not too late... you know you want to...

I personally voted for UseYourIllusionIIs Die Hard cover (Yeah I know, I'm a real trend breaker). It's simply amazing and I love the way everything is so rough looking. Very grindhouse (a style I have always loved).... I'd love to know how you do all those scratches and stuff sometime. The only down-point I can find in your design, and it's really quite a small thing, is that I'm not too sure about the barcode. It's well done and make it look store bought and professional but to those who know that it's a fan edit... it kinda feels like it's just there to fill space. I dunno, maybe I'm just too picky...

Other covers I thought were particularly note-worthy were the Die Hard cover and the Superbad by ThrowgnCpr. The Die Hard cover I thought was very nice with a slick feel to it, but (and please don't take this the wrong way) it just didn't feel "Die Hard" enough for me. It's just that the Die Hard series is a line of fast paced action films and that doesn't really come across in your cover. The Superbad one I thought was really well done and fit in perfectly with the retro feel seen in the opening sequence to the film. The only thing I didn't like about the cover is it felt like something was missing. I really, honestly don't know what, but it just seems... incomplete.

On a completely unrelated note, can I make a suggestion for future Cover Art Contests? I may be wrong, and knowing me like I do I probably am, but I believe that we will get an EVEN BETTER turn out for entries AND for votes if we change this from a bi-monthly contest to a monthly one. I think a lot of people kind of forget about it and/or get impatient with the big gaps in between each one which is why numbers fluctuate so much. A little bit more regularity could theoretically fix this. Besides, with so many new cover-less edits being added to the site it's not like we're going to run out of them any-time soon if we start doing it monthly...

03-24-2008, 08:02 AM
OK my vote is in!! I voted for AstonMartins4Me this round. I liked some others, but I really like Aston's style and I'd like to see some more covers from him in the future (not just contest entries ;) ). The back needed a little more attention, but overall I love the sleek style.

UYI2's cover was really awesome this month, no denying that. The votes will speak for themselves. Great work. I am going to nitpick along with Aston here, but you will lose points with me every time for that damn barcode. it is totally unnecessary as we don't sell fanedits, and I don't even like them on commercial DVDs. It really takes me out of the art. But the cover was just great. beautiful work!

And to everyone else who submitted, the covers were all really cool, and you had great original concepts in them. I look forward to seeing your future entries :-)

...to respond about suggestions for future contests, IMHO monthly was too much. It's hard enough to have people find time to do it every other month. I will totally agree with you though, that there may be a "forget" time period. That is mostly my fault with not promoting enough. I think for future (immediate future) contests, we will stick with bi-monthly, but I may find some way to get people more involved in the down-time, perhaps polls for suggested edits for covers, more advertising, etc. ..some way to keep people in the loop even though they may not have to create a cover.

Remember you don't have to wait for a contest to make a cover art!!!

I think the contest has been very successful so far, and I hope that continues in the future and we get more interest in the community. Thanks everbody who made a cover, voted, and helped advertise. :-)

03-24-2008, 11:39 AM
yes. my second vote... thanks to whoever!
my cover art can still win ;-)
Wrong Time Wrong Place, that's what DIE HARD is about...

03-24-2008, 09:35 PM
I'd just like to say that I understand the DVDs are not sold...duh, they're fanedits of copyrighted movies, but the reason I put barcodes on there a lot of the time is because I personally want that official feel to it. I want the DVD to seem natural, so it can replace the original if I want it to and not feel like some really wierd, unnatural DVD covers. I hate the DVD covers they sell that have all teh normal DVD stuff on an outer box and then you remove the box and there's nothing on it and it's just, like, an image from the movie on the front and back with nothing else...It just feels unofficial and I want my DVD collection to feel official.

On a different note, related to this specific DVD cover, is the fact that I wasn't going to use the barcode because people would bitch about the fact that "they weren't sold so it's not necessary" but it just fit so damn well in the design structure, and I felt just putting a picture there would make it feel wierd and unofficial.

And I don't feel the barcode takes a way from the art because, if you do graphic design for a living (which I am going to college for), you will have to put that stuff on there and it actually makes you more creative with your designs because you come up with very interesting ideas and concepts by thinking of ways to encorperate it into the graphic and have it well laid out with the rest of the cover.

Sorry, just had to explain myself a little. lol.

03-24-2008, 11:14 PM
UYI, to be honest I like the barcode for the exact reasons you stated. I mean, the other covers are all cool without it, but I don't mind it being on there either.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents, and to let you know that you're not alone with your opinion on the barcode.

03-27-2008, 02:26 PM
I tried really hard not to vote for the cover by UseYourIllusionII, but in the end I had to. It's excellent.

I really like the others and each one had things that I really liked. Like Messenjah14's disc. Man, that disc is something I'd put on show just by itself.

Well done everyone.

03-27-2008, 05:14 PM
AstonMartins4Me cover is absolutely fracking incredible! In the history of dvd covers there has never been another dvd cover that even comes close in its sheer extraordinary eligance and genius design! Not to mention, the absolutley INSIGHTFUL AND BRILLANT REVIEWER QUOTES used to enhance this wonderfully conceived dvd cover!!!!!!

Seriously, all the covers look great. I have never been quoted before, its very cool. :)

03-27-2008, 08:20 PM
Metrostar, why did you try hard not to vote for mine? Because I was already winning and you didn't want to be a part of the norm? lol.

03-28-2008, 05:53 AM
Metrostar, why did you try hard not to vote for mine? Because I was already winning and you didn't want to be a part of the norm? lol.

Oh yes, don't take that personally. I was desperately trying to be different, but couldn't. It's a compliment really. :)

03-29-2008, 11:27 PM
lol, no, I wasn't going to take that offensively. I do take it as a compliment because my glorious cover drew you in and forced you to vote for it...it's those beautifully deadly eyes Bruce Willis has when you put him in gold. lol.

03-30-2008, 12:36 AM
I'm starting to turn into a UYI2 fanboy. He got my vote yet again.
Good work everyone though.

Edit: Speaking of which, is there a thread on the Die Hard edit? I can't find it using the forum search.

03-30-2008, 01:27 AM
If you're such a fan, use this!
lol, I made it for a graphics forum I participate in. People really liked my stuff and started saying they were in my fanclub, and so as a joke I made this. A lot of people actually used it in their sigs for a while. lol.

03-31-2008, 08:56 AM
last day to vote!!!

04-01-2008, 08:50 AM
