View Full Version : [After Effects] Recreate Bullet Flashes (resembling Superman The Movie)

Hey guys,

Does someone know how to recreate the bullet flash effect (or something like that), very similar to when Lex Luthor has his guns fire at Superman in Superman: The Movie?
I'm going to start work on a Superman Trilogy edit rather soon, and it has come to my attention that the attack on the White House in Superman II/The Richard Donner Cut does not contain those effects.
I'd like to recreate them myself, in After Effects of course, to aid strengthen the dramatic scene.

EDIT: ThrowgnCpr, I was just about to edit my post :-)
It's this part right here:

if you could post a very short clip to youtube or something of the effect you want to match exactly, that would allow people to assist you a bit better.

Hmmmm. I think your easiest option might be compositing some bullet hits. There are free ones available here:

You may need to do some color work -- curves or levels, most likely -- to get that blown-out white look, if you want to emulate the originals that closely. Experimenting with different blend modes for the hits might help too.

Hope this helps!

And how do I recolour individual levels? Do I just use the rectangular selector tool and highlight the spots I want to change?

Here's a basic guide to how the levels sliders work:

And this tutorial might give you some basic tips on commonly used effects:

hebrides suggestions are all good. You should be able to do this fairly easily. They aren't composited all that well in the clip you posted, so you should be able to get them to match without too much effort.

You're saying I should be able to recreate them without too much effort, right?
Because my goal is to recreate the actual footage, but to create the same bullet impacts on the bodies of Zod, Non and Ursa when they are fired upon by the military and White House Security Staff during their attack on the President :)

yes, my point was whatever shots you want to emulate this effect on, should be possible without too much effort. The compositing on the shot you have linked above wasn't done all that great, and it was official! If you want to make other shots look similar, it should be possible without too much trouble.

Cool, thanks! :-) I'll keep it in mind for when the time comes. Thanks again guys :-)
